Are you after a quick, convenient, pain-free, and chemical-free treatment that will leave your skin feeling smooth and glowing? Look no further than dermaplaning. Dermaplaning is perfect for those looking for a boost of radiance and perfectly complements your existing beauty regime. We explain what Dermaplaning is and why you should never do it yourself at home.
Dermaplaning, what is it?
Dermaplaning is a skin treatment that uses an exfoliating blade to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. It’s a safe and effective cosmetic treatment for uneven acne scars, fine wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, peach fuzz, and dull and dry skin. It leaves your skin smooth, radiant, and youthful.
The medical-grade scalpel used for exfoliation removes the top level of the skin, stimulating the growth of new skin cells and revitalising the skin. It’s been dubbed the scalpel facial, and it’s a safe, cost-effective, and pain-free way of rejuvenating the skin.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
Because the procedure is safe and gentle, it doesn’t come with side effects that you’d get with harsher treatments. Results include:
- Evening out skin tone – perfect for people with hyperpigmentation, dull and tired skin, rough spots, and dark spots.
- A more youthful glow – it removes fine lines and peach fuzz, giving you super-smooth, dewy skin. It also cleans out the pores, giving them a smaller appearance.
- Reduces acne scarring – although it’s not recommended with active acne breakouts, this treatment helps minimise future breakouts by cleaning out pores. Dermaplaning does not cause breakouts. It reduces redness from past outbreaks and minimises the appearance of pockmarks.
- Convenient and pain-free – the treatment can be performed in as little as an hour, and there is no recovery time. There are no harsh chemicals involved or poking, pulling, or scratching on the skin.
Is Dermaplaning good for your skin?
Exfoliating the top layer of the skin stimulates collagen production and encourages the growth of new skin cells. This leaves you with baby-smooth, glowing skin that can better absorb treatment serums and creams, and support flawless makeup applications.
It also helps prevent future acne breakouts as it deep cleans the pores, removing excess oils, dirt, and trapped hair. The treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones, even sensitive skin. It’s not recommended for inflamed skin or open lesions and wounds, however.
Dermaplaning is great for people with sensitive skin or allergies as it doesn’t use harsh chemicals and is a less invasive form of facial treatment.
How often should you Dermaplane?
It’s best to give your skin at least four weeks between each treatment as dermaplaning involves deep exfoliation. This will give your skin enough time to replenish. Doing it too often will run the risk of over-exfoliating and irritating your skin, and compromising its moisture barrier.
If you are thinking of having a wax treatment, we recommend scheduling your wax appointment at least two weeks before dermaplaning to lessen skin irritation.
How long does Dermaplaning last?
For most people, results typically last three weeks. Maintaining a good skincare routine at home and wearing sunscreen to protect from sun damage can enhance your results.
Does Dermaplaning have any benefits for your entire body?
Dermaplaning can be performed anywhere on the body but is commonly done on the face. Dermaplaning done on the body is called body-planing. It has the same benefits on the body as dermaplaning does on the face. It is a popular hair removal method for those who have sensitive skin and cannot take wax and other chemicals. It’s also perfect for those who are not good candidates for laser hair removal.
Can I Dermaplane my legs?
While in theory, you can dermaplane your legs, we advise against it. Dermaplaning uses a similar razor blade you’d use for shaving, however, it is much sharper, and there is a special technique for using it. Without knowing the correct procedure, you can easily cut and injure your skin leading to infection and scarring. Dermaplaning should only be performed by a professional.
How is Dermaplaning different from shaving?
Dermaplaning and regular shaving use a similar method, but that’s where the similarities end.
Shaving only removes peach fuzz, while dermaplaning is a deeper type of exfoliation that removes much more. Also, the blade used in dermaplaning is a specialised tool that is sharper than a regular razor, and should only be used by a trained and experienced professional. Finally, shaving must be done on wet skin, but dermaplaning is done on completely dry and oil-free skin for best results.
We do not recommend trying dermaplaning by yourself at home as you can nick your skin and cause infection and scarring.
Does Dermaplaning cause stubble?
It’s common for the hair to feel slightly different after dermaplaning, but this does not mean dermaplaning causes stubble. It’s got to do with the hair being cut straight across and not because the hair is growing back thicker and coarser. The hair will still be the same texture, colour, and length as it has always been, once it grows back. It also doesn’t grow back faster as dermaplaning doesn’t do anything to the hair follicles.
Dermaplaning does not cause your hair to feel stubbly like a man’s. This is because the type of hair men have on their faces is different from the fine hairs on your face, called vellus hair. More on that below.
Does Dermaplaning make your hair grow back darker and thicker?
The good news is that dermaplaning will not make your hair grow back darker and thicker. This is because the type of hair that grows on your face – vellus hair – is very fine and short, and its growth and appearance don’t change when you shave it. The only way your hair will grow back darker and thicker is through hormonal changes, and sometimes through the natural aging process.
