Everything You Need To Know About Lip Fillers (But Were Too Shy to Ask)

If your lips are a bit on the thin side (or if you find their volume decreasing over time), you may be quietly contemplating a ‘little help’ to get that fuller look.

The truth is, you are one of many people who seek to get fuller lips. Using lip fillers is now very common and has gained widespread public acceptance. So don’t be shy about investigating further.

Lip fillers fall into the dermal filler category. When administered by a skilled expert, the effect is pronounced yet natural-looking. It’s likely you have encountered more people who have had their ‘lips done’ than you may realise.

So now, let’s answer some of those vital questions. Such as, ahem, what lip fillers actually are; what lip filler swelling stages to expect; and what lip filler aftercare recommendations to follow.

All this and more, so you can determine if this treatment is suitable for you.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are substances injected into the lips to increase the volume and shape of your lips. The most frequently used lip filler in Australia is hyaluronic acid (HA). That’s because this type of lip filler is reported again and again as being the most effective and safe.

The cosmetic procedure involving injecting lip filler is called lip augmentation. It is all about plumping up your lips to improve the appearance of your face.

Maybe you were born with lips thinner than you would like them to be. Or perhaps, the fullness of your lips has decreased from the natural aging process.

If you have drooping mouth angles or would like to change your lip shape, dermal filler can also be of use.

Whatever the reason, in the hands of an expert, you could finally get the lips you have longed for.

How Much Do Lip Fillers Cost?

In Australia, the cost of lip augmentation treatment can range from $389 to $550 per 1ml. Typically, 1 ml is all you would need.

‘A responsible practitioner will assess the anatomy and natural proportions of the face. They will not inject more than the body can take,’ says Nicky Tzimas of Island Glow Aesthetics. ‘This enables us to achieve a natural-looking result safely’.

What is Lip Filler Aftercare?

At the time of the treatment and for the first few days following, it is normal to experience some after-effects.  You can easily manage these with appropriate aftercare.

Lip filler Swelling Stages

While the plumping result can be seen immediately after the treatment, there is further swelling in the next 7–10 days before you see the desired look again.

There is a short cycle of swelling which arises in reaction to the needle punctures made during treatment.  This increased swelling should not be confused with the final result and is nothing to be concerned about.

So in the meantime, it’s important to know about the lip filler swelling stages. While the exact timeframe differs from person to person, here is what you may expect:

  •         Day 1 (Immediately after treatment): The lip-plumping effect you want
  •         Day 2 after treatment: Lips are the most swollen
  •         Day 3 to Day 6: Swelling subsides
  •         Day 7: The final result

Note that at times, the final result may take a further 3 days.  So sometimes, you can expect the final result on the tenth day.

As well as the swelling, you may see a tiny amount of bleeding at the injection site right after your treatment. It is normal to experience some tenderness and bruising which usually subsides after about 2 days.

It is fine to use foundation and lipstick over the area straight after treatment if you wish.

Lip Filler Aftercare

For at least 24 hours after your treatment, it is best to follow a few aftercare directions to help manage the after-effects.  Especially the swelling. This ensures you get the best possible result from your treatment.

 Things to DO:

  •         Drink water
  •         Hold an ice pack to your lips

Things to AVOID:

  •         Strenuous exercise
  •         Drinking alcohol
  •         Massaging lips or kissing
  •         Exfoliating the lip area
  •         Drinking through a straw
  •         Vitamin E supplements (this can worsen bruising)

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Lip fillers typically last between six and 12 months before being safely absorbed by your body.  This all depends on the natural metabolism of your body.

You may like to book a review and assessment after about six months.

What Are The Long-Term Effects Of Dermal Filler?

Lip fillers are not permanent and will dissolve safely in your body over time.

And although hyaluronic acid dermal fillers rarely have long-term side effects, there are occasional risks you need to be aware of.

Sometimes, migration of the injected site may occur, or the plumping may be uneven.

Such negative effects are usually associated with poor injection technique, or when too much of the product is injected.

This is why it’s crucial to use the services of a skilled and highly trained professional.

It also helps when the aftercare recommendations mentioned earlier are followed.
